Minority-Review’s Swati Sharan had the pleasure of speaking with actor Pratik Gandhi and director Hansal Mehta for the series on Gandhi which was shown at TIFF 2025. Here is some of what they shared. Check out our review on the series here.
When will Gandhi be released in India?
Hansal: We have not yet decided yet. We will decide on a streaming platform and then release it a bit later. Right now, we are under post-production. This will be completed in 3-4 months. There’s still some work left to be done.
Were you presenting at TIFF from a funding perspective?
Hansal: No. It’s not from a funding perspective. We just felt TIFF was a wonderful platform to show what we have made. We wanted to show how we can create an international level show in India.
Pratik: This might be the first full-fledged series on Gandhi that has been made in India for an international audience.

Many of us are familiar with Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi. But it was from a non-Indian perspective. The Making of a Mahatma was also from South Africa and from that perspective. And then maybe we had Naseerudin Shah playing Gandhi in Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram but that was a fictional film though it was from India. But definitely there aren’t many depictions of Gandhiji given his stature, until now maybe.
Pratik: In this age group at least nowhere. That’s True. Even Hey Ram is 25 years old now.
So you are catering to the new generation?
Pratik: Even the older generations. Many older generations don’t know about his earlier life. We have all largely seen the Mahatma version of him.
Have there been depictions of Gandhiji in Gujarati films or dramas?
Pratik: There are many on the stage. Gandhi has largely assumed a mythical status as a Mahatma. We all look at Krishna, Draupadi or Arjun from a variety of perspectives. We have done the same with Gandhi. The only difference is that no one has tried to capture his entire life on celluloid till now. And this is only possible under a long format.
There haven’t been any films on Gandhi in Gujrati till now. Or at least, I have not seen any though there are many plays on him which I know about.

Women have been depicted in a very strong manner in this film and Pratik’s wife Bhamini is in the series too.
Pratik: Yes. My wife Bhamini is playing Kasturba Gandhi in this. We have been working together on the stage for years. This will be the first time we will be seen together on screen. And you’re right, women have been depicted quite powerfully here. The primary one is Ba or Gandhiji’s mother. She had a tremendous role to play in Gandhiji’s life.
Hansal: To say we have depicted women as being strong would be putting women down. We have shown them as what they are. If they were strong, they were. If they were weak, they were. I will not judge them for being strong or weak. Kasturba held a great influence over Gandhi. You will get to see more of that as the series progresses.
